The African Union (abbreviated AU in English, and UA in its other working languages) is a confederation consisting of 53 African nations as well as several intergovernmental organizations. Established on July 9, 2002, the AU was formed as a successor to the amalgamated African Economic Community (AEC) and the Organization of African Unity (OAU).
